Miniature Pearlware TransferwareChilds Cup & Saucer Set
JUVENILE ~ RABBITS
Wood & Brownfield Staffordshire, England c 1840
This child’s miniature transferware cup and saucer was originally part of a child's complete tea set. The shapely cup stands 1-1/2 inches tall on a raised pedestal base with a fancy applied handle. The saucer measures 4-3/4 inches in diameter. The color is a rich and earthy sepia brown finished with a pearlware glaze. The set was impeccably potted and light bodied.
It depicts a young girl holding a basket of vegetables and feeding a pair of tame rabbits or hares. The inside bottom of the cup has another image of rabbits. A bold yet delicate floral cartouche alternates with fine netting decorates the outside of the cup and the border of the saucer. The decoration is very fine, with little white space remaining.
The saucer is marked with pattern name is "JUVENILE", and the initials W&B indicating that the set was made by Wood and Brownfield, a pottery maker in Staffordshire England 1838-1850.
