    Description

Scarce Brown Aesthetic Transferware Childs Tea Set Teapot
    STAG
Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire, England c. 1880
This transferware children's teapot, circa 1880, was originally part of a child's tea service. The lidded pitcher stands about 5-1/2 inches tall transfer printed in a rich sepia brown.
The teapot features a noble stag or deer basking in the moonlight in a meadow surrounded by mountains. This beautiful scene is framed by an aesthetic background of branches, fern, scrolls, a sailboat and a smattering of geometrical whimsies, with a double zig-zag border, leaving very little white space.
The set was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a 19th century pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England well known for his whimsical children's teasets. The pattern is known as "Stag". It is marked with the pattern name, pattern number and maker's CA&Sons backstamp.
The teapot is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs.
The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people are drawn to it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little misses, bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm.
Overall crazing, consistent with age. Sold as is.
Brown aesthetic transferware depicting wild animals is hard to find and highly sought after, and cherished by nature and animal lovers! This antique teapot will make a stunning addition to any collection of Aesthetic movement dishes.
