~ Antique Fine Early Spode Staffordshire Polychrome Transferware Dessert Plate c1825 ~~ Tumbledown Dick Pattern ~ #2 of 2
~*~
8” in diameter
An amazing feat of early transferware printing and enamel coloring; an exotic bird on a branch of peonies was transfer printed in dark blue outline and polychrome painted.
Then then design was ackyed or painted with resist to allow a ‘cracked ice’ sheet pattern background to be printed in brown / ecru / beige.
Finally all the details of the bird and flowers are finely detailed with gilding.
There is an impressed SPODE in all caps on the reverse, an all caps SPODE printed in blue near it. There is also the hand painted 3716 pattern number in red.
There is another small mark painted in black like a cap D, probably a gilder or enameler signature.
One theory of the pattern name is that it derives from an upside-down 'dickie bird.’

In superb condition with barely any signs or use or wear. The back shows some very light glaze crazing and a small glaze pop near the edge.
Amazing on display, I have an identical plate listed and will be happy to combine the shipping if you are interested in the pair.
Please see all the photos and close up photos to add to the condition report.
