    Description

    Early Childs Transferware Nursery Mug
CAT and Greedy Kittens Drinking Milk
    Staffordshire England c 1900
This rare little child's transferware ironstone mug dates to c1900. The cup stands 3-1/2
    inches
    tall and measures 3-1/2
    inches
wide with an applied loop handle.
It is transfer printed in black or dark brown, embellised with wisps of hand colored wash in green, light purple and yellow. It depicts a mama cat and her four rambunctious kitten, on of them diving into a pan of milk. The image is captioned "Now Greedy, don't take it all!".
The cup may be attributed to Grimwades in Englan. It is unmarked and we have found no reference to it in the standard source books.
Entertaining images on mugs and plates like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and to encourage their imaginations in the 19th century.
    The mug is in
    very good
    condition
    with chips cracks or repairs.
Wear to the foot and top rim consistent with age.  The image is delightful, a throwback to a much simpler time. The cup will make a great addition to your collection of children's dishes. A lovely addition to your ABC transferware collection.
We have also listed early children's transferware this week to mix and match. We are happy to combine postage for multiple purchases.
